The authors have revised the Adhemarius gannascus complex. They demonstrate that, in fact, it regroups 4 species, gannascus (Stoll, 1790), daphne (Boisduval, (1875)), fulvescens (Closs, 1915) and jamaicensis (Rothschild & Jordan, 1915), considered until now as synonyms or ssp. of gannascus. Three subspecies of daphne are studied: daphne (Boisduval, (1875)) in South America, interrupta (Closs, 1915) in Central America and Mexico, and cubanus in Cuba Rothschild & Jordan, 1908). For 3 of the species, one lectotype is designated. The fact that the type gannascus is lost, a neotype is proposed for that species to stabilize the nomenclature. It is in fact impossible by the sole study of the Stoll description or by the examination of his figures, to associate precisely one species to that name. For these reasons we designate the most widely spread species in South America by gannacus. The distributions of these entities are specified, as well as there intraspecific variations.
