Based on a revision of approx. 6,700 specimens, including the available type material, from 40 public and private collections, 53 valid extant species of the lathrobiine genus Achenium Leach are recognized; one species is represented by two subspecies. Four species are described for the first time: Achenium kazakhicum n. sp. (Kazakhstan), A. vitalyi n. sp. (Kazakhstan), A. transversiceps n. sp. (Morocco), and A. tectum n. sp. (Morocco).
